NYC heightens security to counter potential threat
by Derek Patterson on 09/09/11
NEW YORK (AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg rode the subway Friday morning to assure commuters that the city is fully prepared for a potential terror threat before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
"We take every single threat that is credible seriously," Bloomberg said as he stood on the platform at the City Hall subway stop in lower Manhattan. "We may feel that it's more likely or less likely but you never want to say 'well we didn't think that was very likely' so we didn't do anything."
U.S. officials said Thursday that they were chasing a credible but unconfirmed al-Qaida threat to use a car bomb on bridges or tunnels in New York or Washington. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Thursday that police are beefing up security at bridges and tunnels, setting up vehicle checkpoints and doing bomb sweeps of parking garages.

Disability Insurance For Military Doctors
by Derek Patterson on 12/30/10
Did you know that most of the U.S. military doctors and dentists are paid bonuses above their "rank pay" as a way to keep professional people in the armed services for a longer period of time? The cost of training and the medical school education which the military paid for needs to be recaptured with service given back. But to assist in the effort to keep military professionals from jumping ship and joining the ranks of private practice, where the incomes are significantly more, the bonus income is the enticement needed.
From a Disability Financial Planning standpoint military doctors are at a much higher risk of suffering financial consequences in the event that they become disabled due to the following reasons:
- The U.S. Government will only pay disability benefits based on the "rank pay" and not on the bonus pay. Many military professionals also moonlight with private practices providing even more uninsured income. This leaves the doctor vastly underinsured.
- The concern of loss of future earnings needs to be considered as well given that once they leave the military they will find a more lucrative income waiting for them if they remain healthy and are able to accomplish that goal.
At eGlobalHealth Insurers Agency, LLC we are able to provide disability benefits to cover the under insurance problem with supplemental monthly benefits to properly cover the bonus income. Additionally a lump sum benefit can be offered to offset the concerns for future lost income. Both of these financial planning tools are available for your military professional clients.
